Ambuluwawa Tower: Sri Lanka’s Sky-High Architectural Marvel

Ambuluwawa Tower: Sri Lanka’s Sky-High Architectural Marvel

Ambuluwawa

Located near Gampola in the Kandy District, Ambuluwawa is one of Sri Lanka’s most unique and famous tourist destinations. Situated just 25 km from Kandy city and 6 km from Gampola town, the Ambuluwawa mountain peak reaches an elevation of approximately 3,567 feet above sea level. Perched at the summit is the iconic Ambuluwawa Tower, standing roughly 150 feet high.

๐Ÿ•Š A Symbol of Religious Harmony

Ambuluwawa holds special historical significance as Sri Lanka’s first multi-religious sanctuary, conceptualized by former Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne. The site incorporates sacred architectural symbols representing four major world religions—Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism. It stands as the only location in Sri Lanka where a Buddhist temple, a Hindu kovil, a Christian chapel, and a Muslim mosque exist together on the same ground.

Ambuluwawa

๐Ÿ—ผ Climbing the Spiral Tower

The main Ambuluwawa Tower is designed in the shape of a Buddhist stupa, crowned with a crest structure at its top.

The Experience: Climbing the narrow, spiral staircase surrounding the outer spire is a thrilling and adventurous experience that offers an unforgettable adrenaline rush.

Safety Notice: As you climb higher, the pathway becomes increasingly narrow. While the base stairs are about 3 to 4 feet wide, the upper steps narrow down to just around 1.5 feet—allowing space for only one person at a time. Therefore, climbing to the very top is not recommended for young children or elderly individuals.

Entry Ticket: Visitors must purchase an entrance ticket to access the tower and premises.

๐ŸŒ„ 360-Degree Panoramic Views

Reaching the top rewards climbers with a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of Sri Lanka’s central highlands:

South:             Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak)

East:    Pidurutalagala Mountain Range

North: Knuckles Mountain Range and Hanthana Mountain Range

West: Bathalegala (Bible Rock) and Utuwankanda

๐ŸŒฟ Nature, Bio-Diversity & Biodiversity Complex

Ambuluwawa is officially recognized as Sri Lanka’s 4th Botanical Garden. It serves as a sanctuary rich in endemic bird species, diverse flora, and rare medicinal plants. At the base of the mountain, visitors can also enjoy a landscaped park and a peaceful rock garden.

⏱️ Time Needed: Plan for approximately 2 to 3 hours to fully explore the grounds and complete the tower climb.

๐Ÿš— How to Get to Ambuluwawa

By Private Vehicle: Drive from Gampola town along a winding mountain road that leads directly to the base of the Ambuluwawa Tower.

By Public Transport: Take a train or bus from Kandy to Gampola town. From Gampola station or bus stop, hire a local tuk-tuk to take you up to the tower complex.

Best Time to Visit

Time of Day: The best times to climb are early in the morning or late afternoon after 3:00 PM.

Weather Warning: Avoid climbing during heavy rain or foggy conditions, as the narrow, damp steps can become hazardous.

Avoid Crowds: Weekends tend to draw large crowds, so visiting on a weekday offers a much more relaxed experience.

๐Ÿ“ธ Drone Photography Rules

Ambuluwawa is a world-renowned destination for drone photography. However, operating a drone requires special prior permission from the ticket counter / administration office.

Ruwanwelisaya: The Great Stupa Revered Worldwide

Ruwanwelisaya: The Great Stupa Revered Worldwide

Ruwanweliseya

Ruwanwelisaya holds a paramount position among the Solosmasthana (the 16 sacred places) and the Atamasthana (the 8 sacred places) venerated by Buddhists around the globe.

๐Ÿ› History and Architecture

Located in the sacred city of Anuradhapura, this magnificent Stupa stands at approximately 338 feet in height with a circumference of nearly 1,000 feet.

Built By: King Dutugemunu in the 2nd Century BC.

Architectural Shape: Designed in the Bubbulakara (bubble-like) shape, inspired by a rising bubble on the surface of water.

Sacred Relics: It enshrines the largest quantity of Lord Buddha’s relics compared to any other stupa—housing approximately one Drona of relics.

Miraculous Origins: According to the Mahavamsa, precious metals and jewels required for its construction—such as gold, silver, copper, and gems—appeared miraculously in various parts of the island.

Restoration: After falling into decay due to foreign invasions, the stupa was restored in the 10th century under the leadership of Ven. Narangsi Sumanasara Thero.

Ruwanweliseya

๐ŸŒฟ The Name Behind the Stupa

Prior to construction, the land chosen for the stupa was inhabited by a tree deity named Swarnamali. After seeking her permission to clear the site, the stupa was named Swarnamali Maha Stupa in her honor.

๐Ÿ” Key Features of Ruwanwelisaya

๐Ÿ’Ž The Crest Gem (Chuda Manikaya)

Gracing the top of the stupa is a 5.5-inch tall crest gem gifted from Myanmar (Burma). It symbolizes the supreme illumination of Enlightenment and Nibbana.

๐Ÿ— The Relic Chamber (Dhathu Garbhaya)

As recorded in the Mahavamsa, the inner chamber houses a golden Bo tree, golden statues depicting the Jataka stories, and sacred lamps crafted to burn indefinitely.

Dewatha Kotuwa & Kot Kerella

These upper structural components symbolically represent the Noble Eightfold Path and the pathway to Nibbana.

๐Ÿšช Vahalkada (Frontispieces)

Intricately carved frontispieces adorn the four cardinal directions, decorated with traditional motifs such as Punkalasa (vessels of abundance) and lion figures.

๐Ÿ›• Image House (Pratima Gharaya)

Inside the main image house, visitors can pay homage to statues of the four Buddhas of the present era (Kalpa): Kakusandha, Konagamana, Kassapa, and Gautama Buddha. A statue of Mariteya Bodhisattva is also enshrined here.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ Sacred Footprint (Sri Pathula)

Enshrined within the complex is an ancient, rare stone carving of the Buddha’s sacred footprint decorated with 108 auspicious marks.

๐Ÿ˜ Elephant Wall (Ath Pavura)

A square outer wall featuring 338 sculpted elephants encircles the stupa, symbolizing both grandeur and protective strength.

๐ŸŒณ Jayanthi Maha Bodhi

Located on the southern side of the premises, this sacred tree was grown from a sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.

๐Ÿ— Engineered Foundation

To prevent the massive stupa from sinking into the earth, historical records note that the foundation was thoroughly reinforced using heavy elephant trampling, iron, and stone layers.

๐Ÿชจ Salapatla Maluwa (Paved Courtyard)

The vast courtyard is paved entirely with smooth granite slabs.

On one side of the courtyard sits a miniature model of Ruwanwelisaya. Folklore suggests that King Dutugemunu built this model as a blueprint before beginning the actual construction.

๐Ÿ—ฟ Statues of King Dutugemunu & King Bhatikabhaya

Statues of King Dutugemunu and King Bhatikabhaya are erected within the stupa courtyard to honor their contributions.

๐Ÿ“œ The Final Moments of King Dutugemunu

Before the completion of the stupa, King Dutugemunu fell gravely ill. Desiring to see the finished work, his brother, Prince Tissa (Saddhatissa), draped the entire stupa in white cloth to give it the appearance of being completed. Gazing upon the completed sight of his life's work, the King passed away peacefully and, as history records, was reborn in the heavenly realm.

Ruwanweliseya

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Visitors & Pilgrims

Best Time to Visit: The stone floor (Salapatla Maluwa) can become very hot during the daytime. The ideal times to visit are early morning or evening.

Opening Hours: The stupa complex is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Etiquette: Visitors must remove headwear and footwear before entering. Modest white attire is strongly encouraged when visiting the sacred grounds.

๐Ÿšฆ How to Get to Ruwanwelisaya

By Private Vehicle: Drive along the A0 highway from Colombo; the journey takes roughly 4 to 5 hours.

By Bus: Take a long-distance bus to the Anuradhapura Main Bus Stand, and take a short tuk-tuk ride to the stupa complex.

By Train: Board an express train from Colombo Fort (such as Udaya Devi, Yal Devi, or Rajarata Rejini) heading toward Jaffna, Kankesanthurai, or Mannar, and alight at the Anuradhapura Railway Station. From there, you can reach the stupa via tuk-tuk.

Battalangunduwa: The Hidden Island Paradise in Kalpitiya

Baththalangunduwa

Nestled off the coast of Kalpitiya, Battalangunduwa is a mesmerizing tropical getaway and one of Sri Lanka’s most captivating hidden gems. Spanning across 145 hectares of pristine sandy landscape, it holds the title of being the second-largest island among the 14 islands scattered around Sri Lanka. Located in the Indian Ocean, roughly 18 nautical miles from the Kalpitiya mainland, this secluded islet is home to a small, tight-knit fishing community.

How to Get to Battalangunduwa

Reaching this remote island is an adventure in itself.

Public Passenger Boat: A local passenger ferry departs daily around 8:30 AM from the Kalpitiya Fishery Harbour. The scenic journey takes approximately 2 to 3 hours and costs around LKR 250 – 300 per passenger. The return boat leaves the island back to Kalpitiya at 1:30 PM.

Private Speedboats: If you are traveling in a group or prefer a faster option, private speedboats can be hired, cutting the travel time down to about 2 hours.

Best Time to Visit
