Kumana National Park: The Ultimate Sanctuary for Bird Watchers &
Wildlife Lovers in Sri Lanka
Tucked away in the Ampara District within Sri Lanka’s Eastern
Province, Kumana National Park stands out as the island's premier haven for
bird enthusiasts. Home to over 250 resident and migratory bird species,
visitors frequently spot pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibises,
and various herons roaming freely. A key highlight of the sanctuary is the rare
Black-necked Stork.
At the heart of the reserve lies Kumana Villu, a 200-hectare
natural wetland fed by the Kumbukkan Oya. This swampy basin creates a safe,
thriving ecosystem for thousands of nesting and breeding birds. Beyond its
birdlife, Kumana hosts a rich variety of big game, including Sri Lankan
leopards, Asian elephants, sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, sambar deer, and
spotted deer. Compared to the nearby Yala National Park, Kumana offers a far
quieter safari experience with fewer crowds.
The sanctuary also carries deep cultural and historical
value. The annual Kataragama Pada Yatra pilgrimage route weaves directly
through the park grounds. Spiritual sites like the Kudumbigala Monastery and
Balanagala sacred grounds are also nestled within this wilderness.
How to Reach Kumana
The coastal town of Arugam Bay serves as the closest major
hub, located roughly 35 to 40 kilometers from the park gate.
From Colombo: Travel toward Pottuvil or Panama to access the main Kumana
entrance.
From Arugam Bay or Panama: Take the Okkampitiya–Kumana route, crossing the
Ekamuthu Bridge to reach the sanctuary.
Best Time to Visit
For Bird Watching: April to July is the prime nesting season, attracting dense
populations of migratory birds. Plan your safari between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM
for optimal bird sightings.
Wildlife: February to August offers the best
conditions for spotting land mammals and reptiles. Evening safaris between 3:00
PM and 6:00 PM yield excellent wildlife activity alongside scenic sunset
views.
Note: Exploring the national park requires hiring an authorized 4x4 safari
jeep.
Essential Tips for Your Safari
Gear Up: Carry a camera equipped with a 300mm+ telephoto lens or a sturdy pair of
binoculars to view distant wildlife clearly.

park, bring sufficient drinking water and snacks.

from feeding any animals.
