Discover Galle: The Complete Travel Guide to Sri Lanka’s Historic Southern Gem

Galle Fort

Steeped in over 400 years of history, Galle stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most breathtaking coastal destinations. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ancient port city seamlessly blends rich colonial heritage with vibrant tropical beauty.

Whether you are planning a weekend escape or a longer journey down south, here is everything you need to know before visiting Galle.

🚗 How to Get to Galle

Reaching Galle from Colombo is straightforward, with options for every travel style:

📍 Top Attractions & Places to Visit in Galle

1. Galle Dutch Fort

The centerpiece of the city, this magnificent fort was initially established by the Portuguese using clay and stone. In the 17th century, the Dutch expanded and reinforced it using granite blocks and coral reefs. Inside the ramparts, you’ll find 14 historic bastions once used to position cannons against invaders, along with colonial churches, a clock tower, and museums.

3. Old Dutch Hospital

As one of the oldest colonial structures inside the fort, this building was originally established in the 17th century to treat Dutch sailors and officers. Today, it has been transformed into a chic shopping and dining complex—ideal for unwinding after a stroll along the ramparts.

4. Flag Rock

This prominent rocky outcrop jutting into the sea was historically used by Dutch settlers to signal incoming ships by raising flags. Today, it offers a prime vantage point for spectacular ocean views.

5. National Maritime Museum

Housed in an old Dutch warehouse inside the fort, this unique institution is Asia's only maritime archaeology museum. Highlights include shipwreck artifacts, ocean life exhibits, and a complete skeleton of a blue whale. The building was restored with assistance from the Netherlands following the 2004 tsunami.

6. Rumassala Hill & Jungle Beach

Rumassala Hill features rare medicinal plants typically found in the Himalayas and wet zone forests—a rare botanical feature along the coast. At its foot lies Jungle Beach, a secluded, picturesque bay popular among sunseekers.

7. Japanese Peace Pagoda & Walle Devalaya

Located on Rumassala, the Japanese Peace Pagoda offers tranquil surroundings built with Japanese aid. Nearby on Unawatuna beach sits Walle Devalaya, a historic coastal shrine.

8. Ging Ganga & Galle Harbour
