The estate traces its roots back to the British colonial era, when it was established by a British planter named Allan Collen. Originally named "Allan Collen Estate," folk etymology suggests that the name gradually evolved over time into the local tongue as "Alakola Estate". 

Located in close proximity to the majestic Knuckles Mountain Range, this destination has recently skyrocketed in popularity among avid travelers. It stands out as one of the very first tea plantations established in the country following the introduction of tea cultivation by the British. 

🚗 How to Get to Alakola Estate

Route 1:

From Kandy, you can travel via Hanguranketha and Rikillagaskada, driving towards the Hulu Ganga. You can easily enter the estate right by the Hulu Ganga Bridge. 

Route 2:

You can also travel from Kandy to Wattegama town, and take the road leading to Panvila. While this route offers incredibly scenic views, certain stretches can get quite narrow, so drivers need to be highly attentive and cautious. 

Important Travel Tip:

The internal roads within the estate are exceptionally rugged and difficult to navigate. Ordinary cars and low-clearance vehicles will struggle immensely here. Therefore, it is highly recommended to use a 4x4 vehicle, a Defender, or a local three-wheeler (tuk-tuk) to explore the area.

The absolute best time to visit Alakola Estate is during the dry season when the skies are clear and rainfall is minimal. The ideal time of day to explore is early in the morning. If you arrive during the dawn hours, you will be treated to the magical sight of morning mist draping over the lush green tea bushes, with glistening dew drops sparkling in the early sunlight. 

Geographically, the prime months to visit are between January and April when the rains subside. Conversely, traveling here during June and July can be quite challenging due to the heavy, harsh winds that sweep through the region.

Hathale Mini World's End:

A stunning viewpoint located in Panvila, Kandy. Since you can easily trek to this spot directly from Alakola Estate, make sure to wear sturdy, appropriate footwear. Because it features a sheer cliff dropping down hundreds of feet, you must exercise extreme caution when walking around and taking photographs. 

Sari Ella (Sari Waterfall):

This waterfall earned its unique name because the cascading water beautifully resembles the graceful folds of a hanging traditional Sari. It is an incredibly photogenic and popular spot for photography. However, the surrounding rocks are notoriously damp and slippery, so be extremely careful while walking or posing for photos near the edges. 

Hulangamuwa Waterfall:

 A picturesque waterfall where water cascades elegantly over rugged rock formations, located conveniently close to the Kandy-Mahiyanganaya main road. 

Colonial British Bungalows:

As you wander through the estate, you will come across several historic estate bungalows built during the British era. A few of these architectural gems have been converted into luxury tourist accommodations today. The surrounding environment is incredibly peaceful, typically enveloped by towering pine trees and vibrant rose gardens. 

Kelebokka Viewpoint:

Situated about 8 km into the upper section of the Alakola Estate, this spot offers a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view. On a clear day, visitors can marvel at the Dumbara Valley, the Knuckles Mountain Range, and sometimes even catch a glimpse of the distant Mahaweli River. 

Sembuwatta Lake:

 Located roughly 20 km from the Alakola Estate, this is a gorgeous man-made reservoir beautifully fringed by dense pine forests. It is situated in the upper reaches of a tea estate belonging to the Elkaduwa Plantations. 

Riverston:

 Located about 52 km away from the estate. 

Manigala:

A unique mountain that, from a distance, strikingly resembles the silhouette of a sleeping elephant.
