The Ultimate Kataragama Travel Guide: Sacred Sites, Festival & Travel Tips

Katharagama

Situated in the Monaragala District of Sri Lanka, Kataragama is one of the island's most celebrated and deeply venerated spiritual sanctuaries. Dedicated primarily to the guardian deity God Kataragama (Skanda / Murugan), this sacred town serves as a unique meeting point for diverse religious traditions—welcoming Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians alike in shared devotion.

How to Get to Kataragama

Via Highway (Expressway): If you are traveling via the Southern Expressway, take the Mattala or Hambantota interchange. From there, Kataragama is just a short and convenient drive away.

By Public Bus: Direct long-distance public buses operate daily from the Colombo Central Bus Stand straight to Kataragama.

Must-Visit Sacred Sites in Kataragama

1. Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya

The central heart of the sacred complex, this main shrine is dedicated directly to God Kataragama. Daily Pooja ceremonies are conducted during three specific time slots:

·         Morning Pooja: 4:30 AM – 5:30 AM

·         Midday Pooja: 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM

·         Night Pooja: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

💡 Tip: The evening/night Pooja is the most popular, drawing large crowds of devotees who come to make vows and seek divine blessings.

2. Kiri Vehera Stupa

Legend holds that during his third visit to Sri Lanka, Lord Buddha preached the Dhamma at this exact spot while seated on a golden stool. Built by King Mahasena, Kiri Vehera is considered one of the most sacred Buddhist stupas in the country. Devotees traditionally visit and pay respects here prior to visiting the main Devalaya. It is believed that sacred collarbone relics of the Buddha are enshrined within this stupa.

 3. Ashtapala Bodhi Tree

Growing within the sacred complex is one of the Ashtapala Bodhi trees, which was planted directly from one of the first eight saplings of the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.

4. Menik Ganga

Taking a ritual bath or cleansing oneself in the fresh waters of the Menik Ganga is an essential traditional custom for pilgrims before entering the sacred shrines.

5. Sella Kataragama

Located roughly 5 km from the main shrine, Sella Kataragama features shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Valli Amma. According to local legend, this is where Lord Kataragama met Valli Amma. Folklore says his brother, Lord Ganesha, took the form of a wild elephant to frighten Valli Amma into the arms of Lord Kataragama, who later married her and resided in this area.

6. Wedahitikanda (Wedahiti Kanda)

Perched atop a scenic mountain peak about 4 km from the town center, folklore marks this as the original dwelling place of God Kataragama.

The Grand Kataragama Esala Festival

Katharagama Perahera
Held annually during the lunar months of July and August (Esala), this vibrant festival is one of Sri Lanka's grandest cultural events.

The Sacred Pada Yatra:

Every year, thousands of devotees undertake a arduous weeks-long foot pilgrimage (Pada Yatra) all the way from Jaffna in the north to Kataragama.

Kap Sethuweema Ritual:

Exactly 45 days before the festival starts, a sacred branch from a Rathambara or Kiri tree is cut from the local forest and planted on the temple grounds to seek divine permission for a peaceful procession.

The Procession (Perahera):

The main tusker carries the golden casket from the Ruhunu Maha Devalaya to the Valli Amma Devalaya and back, symbolically re-enacting Lord Kataragama's journey to visit Valli Amma. The parade features vibrant Kavadi dancers, traditional Kandyan and Low-Country drummers, and decorated elephants.

Firewalking Ceremony:

A few days prior to the grand finale, devotees walk barefoot over glowing hot wooden embers outside the main Devalaya in a test of faith.

Water-Cutting Ceremony:

The festival officially concludes on the morning following the final Randoli Perahera with the sacred water-cutting ceremony in the Menik Ganga.
