๐ How to Get to Yala National Park
By Private Vehicle / Expressway
If you are traveling from Colombo via the Southern Expressway
(E01), take the Mattala or Andarawewa interchange. Proceed through Hambantota
and Tissamaharama to reach the main Palatupana Entrance.

Estimated Travel Time: Approximately 3 hours
By Public Bus
Board a Colombo-to-Kataragama public bus and get off at the
Tissamaharama bus stop. From Tissamaharama, the park entrance is roughly 20 km
away, which can easily be covered by taking a local tuk-tuk or private
taxi.
๐️ Best Time to Visit Yala
The ideal window to explore Yala is between February and
September. During these dry months, water sources inside the jungle recede,
prompting animals to gather around remaining waterholes and lakes, making
wildlife sightings significantly easier.
⚠️ Important Note:
To protect the wildlife during peak drought conditions, the
Department of Wildlife Conservation routinely closes Yala National Park from
mid-September to October.

Guided jeep safaris run daily in two primary shifts:

Morning Safari (6:00 AM – 10:00 AM): The cooler early morning temperature
encourages animals to roam freely in open areas before the sun reaches its
peak.
๐ Afternoon Safari (2:30 PM – 6:00 PM): This shift offers optimal chances for
spotting sloth bears and leopards as they emerge toward dusk.

enthusiasts, all-day game drives are also available upon request.
You can reserve safari jeeps prior to your trip via online
platforms, hire one directly at the Tissamaharama town or Palatupana Gate, or
request your hotel to arrange a verified driver.
